Ben ik toch een Hollander?

Vanmorgen een beetje blijven dutten en tv kijken maar het werd al zo warm om half 9 al 24 graden- Dan kwam Ingrid met de kinderen die wat moest schrijven op mijn pc en nog wat dingen doen. Daarna bleef Theresa maar gelijk.
Als mensen vragen van waar ik ben zeg ik altijd Nederland en ik ben Nederlander . Ik dacht zelf altijd dat Hollander eventueel alleen voor mensen uit noord en zuid holland van toepassing was. Maar als ik dit lees ben ik toch wel een echte Hollander nooit geweten waar de herkomst van dat Holland vandaan kwam. Dus ik ben het gewoon beide met extra toevoeging Leienaar of Glibber. Hoewel dat laatste eigenlijk een scheldwoord was wordt het nu met trots gedragen.
The Netherlands and Holland.
Ok, I 'dived in' and found out the following. Hundreds of years ago the northern part of Europe was known as Germania. I'm talking Roman times here so the Netherlands as a country didn't exist yet. The language spoken in those days was what we now know as German, with of course dialects everywhere. One of these dialects resulted in the Dutch language which has therefore similarities to the German language.
Anyway, ages later (10th century) a village near Leiden was in a wooded area and they used the geografical indication 'holt land'. Holt being the dialect version of the German word 'Holz' which means wood. This then developed into 'holland' but was still only used for the area around Leiden and later for the area we now know as Rijnland.
Of course the gentry took over most of the land, as they did everywhere in the world, and they were constantly expanding. In this case further north and they took the name Holland with them. Both economically and politically the western part of the country was the most important so Holland as a name became widely known. And with all the merchant navy activities in the 17th century the name also went worldwide.
In the meantime the whole country was know as the 'niedere länder', German for lower lands, as opposed to 'obere länder' (higher lands). There are still some areas in German speaking countries called Oberland of which the Swiss Berner Oberland is probably the best known. And again the Dutch merchant instincts have to be 'blamed' because that's when the English started naming the country The Netherlands.
When the southern provinces became independant in 1830 they took the name België after Belgica, the Roman name for the area. The other provinces then took Nederland as their name, thus leaving out the plural in 'nederlanden' (low lands). The plural only came back because of the colonialisation and then we became 'Koninkrijk der Nederlanden', Kingdom of the Netherlands.
So both English names for the country are in fact outdated and now incorrect. Nederland is the country and part of the Kingdom and Holland is a part of that country.
Gisteren kregen we aan het eind van de middag een berichtje dat de vakantiefamilie goed in Schlüsselfeld waren aangekomen. Vandaag op naar huis.
De familie van beneden is gaan zwemmen in St Martin even voorbij Gröbming. We hadden begin van de middag een klein buitje en verder bewolkt maar nog steeds erg warm- Ik keek vanmorgen in de spiegel en je kan mijn Dirndlblouse afgetekend zien. Echt zo donker geworden en alleen van het stukje naar huis lopen vanaf de Kirtag want verder zijn we zo veel als mogelijk was in de schaduw gebleven.
Wij gaan morgen naar Leoben naar de Asia Spa lekker samen naar de sauna en zwemmen maar vooral relaxen.
Het is wel grappig wij waren al in de Geowerkstatt en die wordt 19 augustus of zo pas officieel geopend.
En Bianca het kan nog gekker
Eine 24-Jährige ist Samstagabend an den Krimmler Wasserfällen im Pinzgau tödlich verunglückt. Das berichteten die Landespolizeidirektion und die Wasserrettung Salzburg. Die zu einer tschechischen Wandergruppe gehörende junge Frau wollte sich dort die Haare waschen, ist aber auf einem nassen Stein ausgerutscht und in den Wasserfall gestürzt.
