Greetings to all

As principal of Rose Mwakwere Girls Secondary School I am very happy to receive the students from Belgium and their teachers.

The youths are doing very good work. They are painting several buildings, cleaning the school compound, doing some farming and helping in the kitchen. We are thankful for all of this hard work and we highly appreciate the many gifts that we received.

Rose Mwakwere is a girls boarding school in a poor village called Mangawani in Kwale County in Coast Region. As the principal I am faced with a big challenge in managing the school because most of my parents suffer abject poverty and can't pay the school fees. I often must go out of my way to seek financial assistance from organisations and individuals who can help. I work very hard to improve the school and the lives of the students, but it is extremely difficult. Sometimes I even use my family finances to keep the school going.

We really appreciate any kind of help to our school, especially in the following areas:

• Infrastructure: e.g. dining hall, science laboratory, classrooms, library, computer room and staff houses.
• Scholarships for poor girls from this region.
• Sanitary towels for the girls.
• Reference materials: e.g. encyclopaedias and dictionaries.

For my part, I live in the school compound for most of the days. However, most of the school supplies must be bought in the neighbouring town of Ukunda. My husband and children also live in a distant township called Shimba Hills, so transport and travelling is difficult. If I could get a reliable means of travelling and transporting school supplies, I would be most grateful.

My parting remark is that I am grateful to Sunshine4Kids and all volunteer donors who have been helping us in many ways and in building a spacious dormitory.
