Córdoba

Argentinië, Cordoba

Day 52

We arrived this morning at around 6:30am and took a taxi to the hostel. Because it was still early and our beds were not available yet, we went into the common room and planned the upcoming days. At eleven we took the free walking tour through the historical part of Córdoba. We started at Plaza San Martín, which is one of the main squares of Córdoba. We went into the cathedral located on the side of the square and watched a part of the service. We passed by the memory museum, but unfortunately as it was a sunday, it was closed. We contiunued towards the Jesuit crypt at the beginning of the Jesuit blocks, in the very center of Córdoba city. This was constructed as a center of learning and prayer in the city and contains Argentina's first university. The next stop was the narrowest building of Córdoba, which also belongs to one of the narrowest buildings of the world with its three meter width. Then, we stopped and visited la Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesus, another beautiful church. The morning tour continued towards the Monserrat school, one of the most prestigious high schools of Argentina and eventually ended at one of the city's malls. We walked around the mall for a little, almost bought a puppy there, and then went back to the hostel for lunch. In the afternoon we decided to do another walking tour, this time through the modern part of Córdoba. This time we started at Palacio Ferreyra. Sadly this one, as well as the next stop, Museo Emilio Caraffa, were both closed due to it being a Sunday. Then, we walked through Parque del Bicenterario, which is a park with two hundred colored rings, on each ring the most important happening engraved. We then arrived to a building with a large polar bear statue. The statue was actually supposed to commemorate the polar bears in the Antartic, yet the problem was that there are no polar bears in the Antartic. When the politicians found this out they tried to keep it a secret, but revolutionaries stole the statue and left it in the middle of traffic for four months. Since then, the statue has been everywhere and nowhere. We continued walking and ended up looking at a lighthouse in the middle of the city. We saw Sarmiento park with the view over the ferris wheel made by the Eiffel brothers and visited the Iglesia de los Capuchinos. We ended in the Güemes neighborhood with its little flea markets, galleries and bars and pubs. We stayed in one of the bars and had drinks and dinner with a Dutch couple, two Americans and someone from Swiss. After this, we walked back to the hostel and called it a day.
