Day 42
This morning, we left for a day of lagoons and desert. We first went to Laguna Hedionda and we were all surprised how beautiful the surroundings were. There were llamas standing on the grass next to the lagoon and there were flamingos everywhere in the lagoon. They were so close and it was so special to see them wild in nature. We then continued to Cañapa Lake, where we ate lunch with views over mountains and more flamingos. After that, we went to the third lagoon, Laguna Blanca. This time there were no flamingos, or any wildlife whatsoever, due to minerals that make the lake toxic (and made it smell like rotten eggs). However, it was again very beautiful and impressive. We then drove through desierto de Siloli, and because our driver had been driving like we were participating in the actual Dakar, our car broke down in the middle of the desert. After fixing the car up for about thirty minutes, the engine started again and we could continue our way. We arrived at Árbol de Piedra, a strange rock formation in the middle of the desert. Here, we took some pictures and climbed the different rocks. Our last stop of the day was in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, at the Laguna Colorada. The lagoon had beautiful colors and there were a lot of flamongos again. In the afternoon we arrived at our hostel in the middle of the desert. The hostel was only half finished and we had the place all to ourselves. The six of us spent the night drinking beer and playing drinking games and then called it a day.
