Day 38
Our first full day in La Paz and we decided to do a tour around the city. We started off at San Francisco Plaza, with its beautiful cathedral. Even though I was already amazed by the amount of gold inside Copacabana's cathedral, this cathedral had even more gold inside. We continued towards the witches' market, a traditional market that sells llama fetuses and other items necessary to perform an offer. The witches' market then continued into the Rodriguez open market. This market covers a lot of blocks of the downtown area and locals are selling fruit, meat, toys, nuts, everything. We ended up at the San Pedro square, right next to the San Pedro prison, where women were lining up outside to visit their husbands. We then crossed the main road which divides the part of the city with Spanish influence from the traditional part. On the other side of the main road was a lot of European architechture and also the place where you can find the political area with the presidential palace and city hall. We got stuck in a Señor de los Milagros parade. We eventually ended up at the main square with hundereds of pigeons, surrounded by the government palace and the justice building. Our last stop of the tour was Hyena Street, which is the only street in La Paz that has regular maintenance. In the afternoon we went to see Cholitas wrestling, which is basically two women in traditional clothing wresting. For sure a very weird and and not a very pleasant experience. Not at all my thing, haha. On the way back, the view over the city with all its lights was breathtaking.
