Puno

Peru, Puno

Day 33

We arrived at Puno busstation at 4:30am, after spending the night in the bus. The busride was way better than expected and actually very comfortable. We checked-in at the hostel and got a pancake breakfast from the hostess. Around two hours later, at 7:10am, we were picked up at the hostel together with some others and rode to the pier. From here on out we departed by boat on Lake Titicaca, towards Uros floating islands. These floating islands are arteficial islands on the middle of the lake, built on the roots of reed. On top of these roots, a one meter thick layer of cut off reed is put on these roots to make it a dry surface. In total there are over 2000 habitants in over 100 islands, with every island having its own president. We visited two floating islands and went onto the "Mercedes Benz" boat, a yellow fleet made out of reed. Afterwards we took a speedboat to Taquile Island. We hiked all the way to the top of the island and ended at its main plaza. We had lunch with our group and then made our way back to the mainland. We arrived back in Puno at around 5pm and went to the hostel for a bit. We then had dinner together with the Dutch guy who we met at the Colca Canyon trekking, and a Dutch girl who we met during the Uros and Taquile Island tour. After dinner the four of us drank a coctail (because who skips happy hour) and then made our way to the hostel and went to bed.
