Day 36
Today, we decided to do the tour of the islands around Copacabana. We took the boat from the beach at half past eight and arrived at the first island, Isla de la Luna, at ten. We walked around for a little and hiked up the hill to see the ruins of an Inca Nunnery. Legends in the Inca mythology refer to Moon Island as the island where Viracocha commanded the rising of the moon. Afterwards, we went to Isla del Sol. We got a tour on the island, saw all the Inca ruins which are spreaded over the island and enjoyed the view over the other islands, as well as the mainland. In the afternoon, we took the boat back to the beach of Copacabana. It was around five and thus still early. We decided to have dinner and then climb the third mountain of the day. We walked up one of the highest hills of Copacabana, Cerro el Calvario. This hill had, just as other cavalry hills, stations of the cross set up for pilgrims to visit. We passed 34 crosses and then reached the top. From here on, the view over the whole city of Copacabana was breathtaking and we stayed there to see the sunset. We watched the sun go down at the horizon and then made our way back to the hostel.
