Salar de Uyuni

Bolivia, Salar de Uyuni

Day 41

Our nightbus arrived in Uyuni at 6:30am. We went to a café and had breakfast pancakes and some tea. Afterwards, our three day tour through Salar de Uyuni started. We had a jeep-like car, which we shared with two French guys, a couple from Italy, and our Bolivian driver Agapo. Our first stop was close to the city and was at the train cemetry. All the old trains that are no longer in use are put there, out of the way for the other trains. After a short stop, we continued to the salt flats. We walked on pure salt, which was once -a couple of thousands years ago- a large salt water lake. The salt flats looked truly incredible. We passed a small puddle with what looked like boiling water, but what actually was the salt reacting to other minerals in the water. We had lunch in a building made completely out of salt, right next to the Dakar monument. After that, we drove for a few hours over the salt flats until we reached Isla Incahuasi. This is a really small island surrounded by the salt flats and had humongous cactuses. It was really strange to see hundreds of cactuses at least twice my height, on an island completely surrounded by only salt. After the island, we continued our way by car towards the desert. Our driver drove at least 100 km/h over stones and through the desert sand, as if we were taking part in the Dakar. After some time, we stopped in the middle of the desert and watched the sun set behind the mountains. After the sunset, we drove (raced) to our hostel in the middle of the salt flats and desert. They had built the hostel half of bricks and half of salt, which was so amazing to see. After the six of us had dinner, we went to bed. This first day of the tour was already so beautiful and so much more spectacular and breathtaking than expected.
