Human occupation of the Killarney area dates back to at least the Bronze Age, when copper was first mined at Ross Island, almost 4,000 years ago. In early Christian times, monastic settlements provided the main evidence of the occupation of the area. The most important of these was the monastery on Innisfallen founded by St. Finian the Leper. The "Annals of Innisfallen", written in the 11th-l3th centuries, are a major source of information on the early history of Ireland.

Following the Norman invasion of Ireland, the displaced Gaelic chieftains, McCarthy Mór and the O'Donoghue of Ross, held the lands around the Lakes. Later the lands came into the hands of the Herberts of Muckross and the Earls of Kenmare respectively. In 1911, the Muckross Estate was purchased by Mr. W. B. Bourn as a wedding gift for his daughter, Maud.
Donal McCarthy Mór founded Muckross Abbey, a Franciscan Friary, in 1448. These wellpreserved ruins were the burial place of local Chieftains and, in the 17th and 18th centuries, of the Kerry Poets, O'Donoghue, O'Rathaille and O'Suillehhain.
There is an interesting 19th century cathedral and the National Park borders the southern edge of town. A Franciscan church near the train station has a stained glass window by Ireland’s famous artist, Harry Clarke. Opposite is a sculpture by another famous Irishman, sculptor Séamus Murphy, depicting the poets of the 17th and 18th centuries.
You will see horse drawn carts in the town – ‘jarveys’ are a local tradition and the drivers will take you on a tour around the town, out to Muckross Park, Ross Castle, anywhere you wish! It is possible the word jarvey is a corruption of the name RG Garvie, who were 19th century English manufacturers of carts and farm machinery.

Killarney is world renowned due to the unsurpassed beauty of the setting rather than to any historical or architectural features. It has always been a tourist mecca - more so with the advent of coach travel - and the town has a strong community spirit and a character of its own

Ons Verhaal - Ervaring van de dag

Het was alweer een typische reisdag met stressmomenten. Trein in Waregem had al vertraging waardoor we de voorziene trein naar Zaventem in de Zuid gemist hadden..in de luchthaven had Air Lingus de verst afgelegen desk, de controle verliep vrij vlot maar dan zagen we dat we naar terminal B moesten (Ierland geen Schengen land?) En wat een ongelofelijke massa die stond aan te schuiven voor de pascontrole en het vlotte absoluut niet...we hadden ook gezien dat onze gate achteraan was en we te laat zouden komen, dus maar de stoute schoenen aangetrokken en de rij verlaten en naar voor gegaan en daar dan iedereen voorbij gestoken... Ons gehaast naar de gate en daar nam men rustig de tijd om te boarden :-(
In Brussel zon en ja Dublin was het regen, de busrit verliep vlot en na 4 uur rijden (mooie golf voorbijgereden en grote historische domeinen (Manor's)) waren we op de voorziene tijd in Killarney, nog een half uurtje stappen en we kwamen aan onze B&B, de dame was heel vriendelijk.
Dan nog in het gezellige centrum in een typische Ierse pub een lekkere pint/gin gedronken met een lekkere vis voor mij en Sigrid Irish stew (schaap absoluut mijn ding niet).
In het stadje zijn heel mooie shops met diverse wol artikelen: zeer mooie plaids, sjaals en cape's. (zal voor bij het terugkeren zijn)

Jammer dat ik geen foto vd schoolmeisjes hun kledij gemaakt heb, daar zie ik die van ons niet in naar school gaan.(een groene lap rechte stof, tot 10 cm vd grond, geen enkele plooi in).

Alles staat klaar om morgen onze eerste stapdag aan te vatten...
