The Kerry Way

The Kerry Way is an amazingly scenic long distance walking trail in County Kerry, Ireland and is one of the best walking routes in Ireland if not Europe or even I dare say, the World. It is the longest of Irelands National Waymarked Trails at approximately 215 km long. Looping around the Iveragh Peninsula passing through some of the most isolated and dramatic countryside in the country. The Kerry Way is full of picturesque seaside towns and fishing villages, rich in History, Heritage, Irish Mythology and legend, archaeological sites, beaches and many many tourist attractions.

The Kerry Way has been broken down into nine different stages, this can be extremely demanding. The walking route officially begins and ends in Killarney and it hugs the coast along the Wild Atlantic Way. The Kerry Way takes in the entire Iveragh Peninsula, traditionally in an anti clockwise loop and is the walking alternative to the world famous Ring of Kerry scenic drive or cycle which follows a similar route nearby.

The Kerry Way covers a wide variety of terrain, from the firm footing of tarmac roads to more rugged sections out on wild mountainous countryside. The trail follows small roads commonly known to the Irish as 'boreens', long-abandoned coach roads and mass paths that are now overgrown with grass but nonetheless quite firm underfoot. There are also sections that cross through forestry, national parks and farmland which can get quite boggy in places. Anyone setting out to walk a long distance trail such as The Kerry Way is embarking on a serious test of physical endurance.

Het pad brengt je doorheen de lagere delen van de Mc Gillycuddy's, Ierlands hoogste bergketen, maar evenzeer is er tijd voor culturele bezoekjes en rustmomenten.

Er wachten 9 prachtige wandeldagen (+ 1 keuzedag) , begint en eindigt in het gezellig-drukke stadje Killarney.

• Dag 1- 2/9 Via Waregem - Zaventem(trein) - Dublin (Air Lingus) - Killarney (bus Busbud)

Killarney, zeer mooi gelegen aan het water en er valt heel wat te beleven
Een bezoekje aan het enorme landgoed Muckross House is de moeite waard.

• Dag 2 - 3/9. Killarney - Black Valley

Tocht door Killarney National Park langs de ruïnes van Muckross Friary en langs Muckross House met prachtige tuinen.
Verder via de Torc-waterval - het water van de Devil's Punch Bowl komt hier vanaf een hoogte van 60 m onder luid geraas naar
beneden - en langs de oude Kenmare Road naar Black Valley.
Onderweg beland je in een haast sprookjesachtig bos en passeer je het bovenste meer van Killarney.

• Dag 3 - 4/9 Black Valley - Glencar

In Ierland vind je weinig bergen boven 1000 m, maar op het traject van Black Valley naar Glencar kan je s' lands hoogste toppen
bewonderen: de kale en ontzagwekkende McGillycuddy's Reeks.
Verscholen tussen de bergen en de grillige rotspartijen liggen prachtige meren en in het noorden doemt de Carrantuohill op, met
1038 m de hoogste berg van Ierland. Dit is ongetwijfeld één van de mooiste stukken van de Kerry Way.

• Dag 4 - 5/9. Glencar - Glenbeigh

Via de Seefin mountains en Windy Gap bereik je Glenbeigh, een aangename kustplaats in een mooie baai van de Seefin Mountains.

Tocht van 13 km, 4 uur stappen, niveauverschil: + 350 m.

• Dag 5 - 6/9. Glenbeigh - Caherciveen

Vanuit Glenbeigh vertrek je langs het strand en de duinen van Rossbeigh, vanwaar je een geweldig zicht hebt op de baai en op het
gehele noordelijker gelegen schiereiland van Dingle.
Een vroegere 'Christian Route' brengt je naar een streek met authentieke archeologische sites en schitterende uitzichten over
Dingle Bay en de Atlantische Oceaan.

Tocht van 25 km, 8 uur stappen, niveauverschil + 520 m - Inkorten met 6 km is mogelijk (ter plaatse te regelen).

• Dag 6 - 7/9. Vrije dag

Vandaag kan je eventueel een bootuitstap maken naar de mystieke Skellig Islands, gelegen op ongeveer 12 km voor de kust, meer
bepaald naar het het puntige en grillige Skellig Michael (Sceilig Mhichíl) dat van grote religieuze en historische betekenis is.
Het eiland is het schouwtoneel van menig Ierse legende, o.a. in het verhaal van de strijd tussen Daire Domhain, de 'Koning van de
Wereld', tegen de reus Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) en het leger van Fianna.
Maar wat Skellig Michael echt bijzonder maakt, is de inkijk die het eiland biedt in het leven van een geïsoleerde en door stormen
geteisterde gemeenschap van monniken die hier een goeie 400 jaar heeft standgehouden. De stenen hutten in de vorm van een
bijenkorf dateren van de 6de eeuw. De monniken moesten telkens 600 treden beklimmen om ze te bereiken. Een klim die ook bezoekers
vandaag nog moeten ondernemen.
Voor mensen met zware hoogtevrees is de top van het eiland, ongeveer 218 steile meters boven de Atlantische Oceaan, misschien
wat teveel van het goede. Maar als je het wel aankunt, is dit zonder twijfel een unieke ervaring.
Let wel: je dient deze uitstap vooraf te boeken want de plaatsen zijn beperkt. Zeker sinds Skellig Michael een belangrijke rol speelt i
in de laatste Star Wars-film is het erg populair.

• Dag 7- 8/9. Caherciveen - Waterville

Dit gedeelte van de Kerry Way loopt landinwaarts langs een zacht glooiende bergkam en dwars door Inny Valley, met betoverende
landschappen. Tijdens de lente en in de vroege zomer bloeien er hier enorme aantallen wilde bloemen.

• Dag 8 - 9/9 Waterville - Caherdaniel

Vandaag wandel je langs de kustroute en door Derrynane National Park, waar je het mooie Derrynane House kan bezoeken. Het
behoorde toe aan Daniel O'Connell, een bekende historisch figuur in Ierlands vrijheidsstrijd.
Ook het plaatsje Caherdaniel, waar je vannacht verblijft, werd naar hem genoemd. Het strand van Derrynane zou tot de mooiste en
netste stranden ter wereld behoren.

• Dag 9 - 10/9 Caherdaniel - Sneem

De 'oude boterweg' leid je van Caherdaniel via Eagle Hill en Staigue Fort naar het uiterst charmante plaatsje Sneem aan de
gelijknamige rivier.

Tocht van 17 km, 6 uur stappen, niveauverschil: + 370 m.

• Dag 10 - 11/9 Sneem - Kenmare

Via Tahilla en Blackwater Bridge wandel je langs de rotskust naar de baai van Kenmare en het kleurrijk gelijknamig stadje.

Tocht van 29 km, 9 uur stappen, niveauverschil: + 600 m. Inkorten met 13 km is mogelijk (ter plaatse een transfer regelen met de logiesuitbater)

Overnachting in Kenmare House Sneem Road, Kenmare, Co.Kerry

• Dag 11 - 12/9 Kenmare - Killarney

Over de oude Kenmare Road pas krijg je opnieuw zicht op de meren van Killarney en het gelijknamige stadje.

Tocht van 25 km, 7 uur stappen, hoogteverschil: + 500 m.

• Dag 12 -13/9 Einde wandeltocht. Van Killarney met de bus naar Dublin en vlucht naar Zaventem en trein naar Waregem

Long sandy beaches on the north side give way to rocky inlets and coves.

The Kerry Way is Ireland’s oldest long distance walk and provides 215km (135mi) of remote valleys, expansive coastline and historic villages. This path traverses the Iveragh Peninsula and is home to the “Ring of Kerry,” one of Ireland’s most popular scenic drives. Beaches
The stunning Atlantic coast of Ireland has been shaped and carved by water and wind to create a dramatically beautiful landscape. The north side of the Kerry Peninsula mirrors the old red sandstone of the Dingle Peninsula, gradually changing as you venture south to the limestone crags of the Beara Peninsula. Long sandy beaches on the north side give way to rocky inlets and coves. The climate is warm and temperate, allowing sub-tropical plants like palm trees to flourish.

Lakes
The gorgeous glaciated lakes at the centre of the famous Killarney National Park draw visitors from across the globe. Home to native oak woods, birch, beech and one of the last remaining herds of red deer, Killarney National Park will steal a place in your heart forever. Keep an eye out for breeding pairs of white-tailed eagles as you walk along well-formed trails, footbridges, and graded paths around the lakes.

Mountains
The Macgillicuddy Reeks is the main mountain group on the peninsula and contains the two highest mountains in Ireland. Carrauntoohil is the tallest at 1038m, and Caher is almost as tall at 1001m. These looming giants form a glorious backdrop to your Kerry Way walking trail and can be seen from many points along your journey. Outside of the Killarney National Park, trails become sheep paths, old droving and butter roads and formed forest tracks. Modern recycled plastic Way markers and stiles are interspersed with wooden signs, which date to the original marking of the route. There are no great ascents, as you mostly walk around the mountains rather than up them, but there are some long and challenging days. This is not a route for the faint hearted, or the first time hiker!
