This stage marks the begin of the climb to the Great St. Bernard pass. We leave behind the Rhône River Valley and head up into the steeper mountainsides and narrower valley of the Drance River drainage. From Martigny a steep path leads over the narrow Les Trappistes pass to the medieval village of Sembrancher. From here the route follows the Napoleon trail.
The stage rewards pilgrims with views of steep and tall mountains surrounding high, green pastures above valleys dotted with tiny hamlets. Many consider the Martigny-Crois to Sembrancher portion of this stage the most difficult stretch of the entire Via Francigena – watch for precarious footing before le Bourgeaud and a scramble among boulders after Bovernier.
In Orsières, don't forget to visit the church, the bell and its "Saint Gregoire Mass" and inside the church, the exhibition about Maurice Tornay, born in Orsières.

The Gorges of Durnand (Bovernier), classified among the ten more beautiful Gorges in Europe, the Gorges of Durnand offers a breath taking scenic sight. Footbridges and overhanging wooden staircases looking over 14 torrent cascades invite the walkers to live an unforgettable experience. The Gorges of Durnand extend about 1 km, between the buttresses of the Pointe Ronde and the Catogne Mountain in the commune of Bovernier (613 m altitude) to the south of Martigny. The Gorges is accessible to the public since 1877 by a bucolic path which is transformed to a succession of over head climbing wood footbridges with over look the torrent which bubbles under the feet of the visitor. In front of the walker, the fairy-like cascades spout to the sky. Every turn of the incredible wooden balcony leads to a more extraordinary vision than the breath taking view before. It is an example of the phenomena of erosion. The sky is no more than a thin transparent ribbon above the dark rocks, and in this impressive nature the suspended footbridges appear fragile. The passage with the steps and the wooden runways were constructed in 1877. It was entirely renovated and accentuated in 1987. The bad weather conditions and flooding in July 2006 caused large damage and required an important investment from the Bourgeoisie of Bovernier. In order to cover the regular maintenance costs and the repair of the wood runways, the entry of the site is paying. The way path is approximately 1 km for 200 m of bumps, includes 330 steps and overhangs 14 cascades. It takes approximately 60 minutes to walk with the possibility to return by a pedestrian path in the forest. Good walking shoes are advised to visit this magic fairy sight.
Orsières is easy to reach from Martigny with the panoramic St. Bernhard Express. The history of the Col du Grand Saint-Bernard (Great St. Bernard Pass) has also had a decisive influence on the history of Orsières. North-south trade created prosperity but this was a double-edged sword. The town owes its first historical mention to this: in 925 the Abbot of Cluny was kidnapped near the bridge of Orsières and only released after payment of a ransom. The intact village centre and impressive 11th century bell tower are worth seeing. The Val Ferret still has several of its community bakehouses. These were intended to reduce fire risk and are still used several times a year. The Swiss Army fortifications are a special feature and parts are open to visitors. Orsières has an observation post, Champex a fortress. The area has a long tradition of alp farming with cattle (with Ehringer the dominant breed) and sheep, and its raclette cheese is a favourite with connoisseurs. Cowfighting events are held every four years.

Verhaal/ervaring van de dag

Het was alweer mooi weer, ik passeerde nogmaals La Fondation en ging zo via een rechte baan tot aan het gezellige La Croix (een voorstadje van Martigny). Hier was een mooie picknick plaats (bbq, grote afwasbakken; afdak en zitbanken) en ging het steil omhoog langs de bergwand (ik kan me inbeelden als het sterk geregend heeft dat dit pad glad kan zijn). ik moest een tweetal kleine bruggen over kloven en op een bepaald moment wist ik niet meer vanwaar ik kwam of waar ik naartoe moest; de bewegwijzering is steeds in beide richtingen. Na een dik kwartier dacht ik, "dat daalt en ik ben hier precies al geweest" dus omkeren en terug naar boven. Op een bepaald moment moest ik over een hangbrug over een "wilde Dranse (naarmate ik verder op de brug ging begon ze veelmeer te wiebelen :-(). Hier most ik een drukke baan oversteken en dan ging het steil verder doorheen een mooi bos. Hier was het pad niet altijd goed zichtbaar en op een bepaald moment daalde ik heel steil af richting het snel stromende water tot ik me realiseerde dat kan niet, dus terug dwars de berg op en het pad weer gevonden. In Bovernier passeerde ik enkele grote boomhakkerijen waar ook grote houten tafels konden gekocht worden. Opeens stopte de weg precies maar dan zag ik aan de linkerzijde een hele steil padje langs een puinhelling. De rest van het pad was tussen weidse groene glooiende akkers en weiden.
vandaag was ik weer enkele spoorlijnen gepasseerd. Mijn hotel was heel dicht bij het relatief groot station van Orsières (eindpunt van de treinlijnen en van hieruit vertrekken heel veel buslijnen). Dit is ook het dorp wanneer men in de herfst of lente de Sint Beranrd wil oversteken, men de nodige sneeuwschoenen (Raketten) kan kopen/huren.
Het was een gezellig hotel (de jonge vrouw aan de inkom was een belgische van Waals Brabant) .ik was hier vrij vroeg en had dus tijd om in de dorpje rond te lopen ook een tentoonstelling in de kerk ivm het leven van een jonge boerenzoon die missionaris in tibet is geworden (en vermoord werd). Het eten aan het hotel was heel gezellig en ook lekker (dit terras is precies de place to be van ht voor de rest eerder doods dorpje).
