Volcano activities

IJsland, Mývatn

The start of this day was a little slow because we had to take care of ourselves like taking a shower, go to the bank and the shop to get some supplies, it takes time. Today was volcano day. There is a lot of volcano activity around the lake and we planned to see them all. First we went to Skútustaðir. It was a place with several pseudo craters. They are craters from gas explosions during a volcano eruption. After that we went to Dimmuborgir. We did recognize this name, because there is or was a heavy metal band that has the same name. But I don't recommend to listen to this music. Luckily the area of Dimmuborgir was worth visiting. There were like pillars, made of lava. And the shapes of the pillars were kind of spikey. It takes long to explain how they were made, but the scenery was nice. Also this was one of the film locations of Game of thrones. It was used for the scene of the wildling camp of Mance Rayder. The next place on our list was Hverfjell. It's a big crater that can be climbed. It's also possible to walk around the ring. Unfortunately we had to skip the crater because of the time. We did have time for Grjótagjá. It's a natural hotspring in a cave. But the water isn't hygienic, because there isn't enough flow of the water to keep it fresh. This is also a film location of Game of thrones. It's called the love nest of Jon and Ygritte <3. After the cave we went to the Krafla. It's an area with much volcano activity. Even that much they have a powerplant that generates electricity from it. We did walk at the Krafla area end we were astonished by all the lava that was covering the place. It was black and covering up a really big area and there was like a mountain and it looked like the lava have came out of it. We called it Mordor ;) We were totally amazed by this phenomenon. We made dinner on the parking lot (home is where you park it) and prepare us for the last activity of the day...Jarðbaðschólar. It's like the Blue Lagoon of he north. It's like a natural wellness centre and it was the highlight of the day. The temperature of the swimming pool was nice and there were some nice spots where the water was a bit warmer. There was a nice sauna and a really nice hot tub. It was so yummy! And the weather was also nice with a nice sunset. It was just perfect! When going back to he campsite it was late already. We were hoping there still was some space for our van. Lucky us it wasn't that crowded as the day before. So we had a really nice spot so we could look out over the campsite and the nice little tents and the lake. We are sooo lucky :D
