Founded in the 19th century by the local Mong people, it became a holiday resort for the French in the early 20th century. They named a beautiful waterfall "CatScat". After the French left in 1954, the village was officially renamed Cat Cat, inspired by that waterfall.
The French Indochina War broke out in 1946 and lasted eight years, with the French war effort largely funded and financed by the United States. Eventually, with their crushing defeat by the Viet Minh at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in May 1954, French rule in Indochina came to an end.
So you can still see the influence of the French, both in the food and the style of the houses. On the way I take some nice pictures of the sunset.
