Skydiving in Gananoque

Canada, gananogue

ENGLISH VERSION UNDERNEATH

Even later zien we de eerste parachutes verschijnen.

Ok even controleren.. .

Dat moet lukken lijkt me!

Binnen luttele seconden staan we helemaal stil.

ENGLISH VERSION

Tyler has a special hobby: Skydiving! Skydivers jump from an aircraft at high altitude then make a free fall and land by parachute. They call each other "jumpers".
Today he is going to jump again and we are going along to watch because this is something we want to see of course! The weather conditions are perfect: 25 degrees, few clouds and almost no wind.

The Skydive Centre is located in Gananoque, a town about 30 kilometers from Kingston, and very appropriate called "Skydive Gananoque" (www.skydivegan.com ). The center is located in an old airport which was previously used in the 2nd World War. There is a large hangar which is outside fully covered with wood. Inside there are a number of smaller planes and a fairly large aircraft which appears not to be in use for a couple of years.

There's just a group of skydivers en route to a plane and a few minutes later they take off.
The plane climbs rapidly and is soon a little speck high above us. Moments later, we see the first parachutes appear. It all goes fast and it's fascinating to see. Apparently the skydivers control their parachutes because I see them often make several sharp turns and they all perfectly land on the field before us.

Tyler then asks if I also want to try it today .. ? Hmmm, I have said earlier in a bold mood that I certainly would like to try it one day , but I do not feel that "one day" is today .. :) So I say that I just want to look at it and maybe the next week i will try it. My eyes are again already focused on the still landing skydivers when suddenly I hear a voice say, "but I would like to jump today." Astonished I turn around and look in amazement at the person in front of me .. Ok .. just checking now.

Yes that is really my daughter Melanie who sits in front of me.. CHECK.
Yes, she confirms it once and does not laugh at it .. CHECK.
I squeeze myself twice as hard i can and NO I do not dream. CHECK.

When I ask if she is really 100% sure she confirms it without hesitation ... OK then! This of course changes everything because obviously that's not going to happen! My brave Melanie jumping out of a plane and cowardly dad remain safe on the ground ?? I don't think so!! My decision is clear: Melanie and I will go skydiving today !!

After completing the health risk statement we both get assigned to an instructor who is going to make the Tandem jump with us. I'm going to jump with Jim, he is about my length, and Melanie gets Dean as an instructor. Melanie is not really dressed for this and gets a tough overall, for me it does not appear necessary, shorts and T-shirts are fine!

Then we both get some kind of safety harness and we practice as how to sit at the open plane door. Basically it comes down to that you sit crouched with your left foot, arms crossed in front of you, hold on to the harness and your head back slightly. Doing so the instructor has all the space and there is nothing in the way. Ok, i can do that!

The aircraft has two benches. We get in the airplaine tiede to the instructor and move backwards on the bench with legs on either side. Melanie sits with Dean directly for me. Altogether there are three tandem jumpers and a dozen experienced "jumpers". Tyler sits up front and will jump as one of the first. The plane is on the move, making speed and within thirty seconds we're already in the air. Soon I hear from Jim that we are at 5,000 feet (1.5 kilometers) high. We will, however, jump at some 13,500 feet, so that is 4 km altitude (gasp..).

Jim explains quietly and clearly everything what is going to happen. Once Melanie and her instructor jumped out, we must push straight forward and I take the position at the open door as previously discussed. Jim then pushes us out. Then he will give me a tap on the shoulder as a sign that I can spread my arms. It all feels a bit unreal .. I let it all just quietly going over me, look through the window and focus on the beautiful surroundings ..

There you have it, I see my daughter jump for me from out of a plane and disappear into the depths (help!) Now i move hastily forward to the open door, take my position but forget that I had to put my head behind which Jim corrects. I stare out into the distance, the sound of the aircraft engine rumbles around me together with the sound of the wind. Then a push and we fall out ... My breath cracks in my throat .. my body tightens. We fall so fast that all the skin of my face is pulled back .. The wind howling long my face and it feels as if I can't breath .. (which I obviously can :)). It also feels more like flying than falling .. because we are so high and all beneath of us is so small I loose all sense of distance

After a free fall of about 10.000 feet (3 kilometer) which lasts 55 seconds (as he told me later), Jim pulls the cord, the parachute opens and it seems as though someone upstairs draws us with a huge jerk. Then suddenly we are in a world of peace and silence which is broken by the voice of Jim who asks me what I think of it. Enthusiastically I answer him that it was "great, really great" and he takes everything on video. We are about 3000 feet (1 kilometer) above the ground and Jim now first wants to practice the landing procedure again: I have to keep my legs 90 degrees in front of me and then we'll be landing on the buttocks, slide over the grass and come to a halt.

The question is then whether I want us to very quietly float down or that I might be interested in defy the G-forces by making a couple of loops? Becoming overconfident i suggest that the 2nd option is fine. Jim then pulls one of the cables and we make a huge turn. My stomach expresses solidarity and turns also equally on :( (Fortunately, didn't take a firm breakfast this morning ..). Then we go to the next spin and Jim advises me to look up during the turn. We make another sharp turn and I see air, soil and air in conjunction with a protesting stomach. But that's no problem as the experience is really fantastic.

Due to these manoeuvres we made more speed allowing us to pass by Melanie and Dean (which I did not notice) so we will be the first to land. I see the ground fast approaching .. Jim gives the signal to put my legs in the correct position and ten seconds later we glide over the grass. Within seconds we stand completely still. I thank Jim for this wonderful experience.
Melanie lands shortly afterwards and is also super excited. I feel very proud and take her in my arms. What a star!

Tyler had landed earlier before us and filmed our "arrival" from the ground. We then all go into the hangar whereTyler carefully folds his parachute. A major job which takes about 20 minutes. The whole skydive is on a video which we receive a little later together with a "certificate of Skydiving Achievement".

Melanie has both our videos and several photographs assembled into one compilation.
This experience we will not soon forget!
