Cannobio - Verbania: the long and boring road

Italië, Pallanza

My back and hip were both still not happy, so going up into the mountains definitely seemed a bad idea. Besides, it was going to rain again. I made sure all my things were packed before it started raining and then went shopping. Which took far longer than it should because the little supermarket was way too crowded. Then I had to decide where to go. Following the road was the only, and unattractive, option, but the question was how far. What I really wanted, and normally could do without a problem, was to walk the whole 30km to the city with the big outdoor store I need to visit. All level terrain, but with all these injuries acting up, there is no way I could make that. The only campsite in between was only 14km from where I was, which would mean two days of following that road. In the end I decided just to walk and when I reached the campsite choose whether to walk further and where.
Road it was. This was boring, annoying, and uninteresting. It involved a lot of trying to flatten myself against the guardrail when cars came by, waiting in niches in the rail, crossing the road to be on the safer side with the turns, grumbling, and just wanting to get it over with.
When I got to the campsite it was 17.00, and as I had only left at 11.30 with the rain and the shipping, I didn't want to stop yet. So I walked on to Verbania. There are no campsites here, so once again I'm in a Airbnb room. 3 more hours to go to the store, then I hope to have a map and be able to plan the rest of my trip.

Your first picture of the the small island with the castle and the crane: Brutal vision of a desolate castle in the middle of Lake Maggiore, made up of three rocky islets, it is all that remains of the Rocca Vitaliana fortress built between 1519 and 1521 by Ludovico Borromeo, who gave it this name in honor of an illustrious ancestor. The fortress was built on the ruins of a previous castle, the Castello della Malpaga, which had been used since the 15th century as a refuge by the powerful and cruel Mazzarditi family. These five brothers took control of the Cannobio neighborhood between 1403 and 1404, terrorizing the inhabitants of the district with their acts of violence and piracy. This continued until the Viscontis besieged the fortress, starving the bandits to death. The old castle was razed to the ground, so no trace of it remains. La Rocca Vitaliana was built to defend the upper part of Lake Maggiore from raids by the Swiss after the Duchy of Milan lost control of the Canton of Ticino. The main part of the castle, on the eastern islet, still has its massive walls built directly over the water, following the jagged contours of the rock, and some differently shaped towers that still have part of their battlements. All that remains of the castle on the western islet is a ruined tower and some crumbling parts of the wall. The ruins cannot be visited as they are not safe, but the view from the shore or from a boat is still compelling. The islands' rocky shores are a magnet for adventurous bathers.
